Ingredients for the Cupcakes

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 stick unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 heaping scoop of love ❤️

Ingredients for the Rainbow Icing

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ⅛ cup milk (2 tbsp)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Sprinkles, edible glitter, food coloring (optional)

Instructions for the Cupcakes

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a cupcake pan with colorful paper liners.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients – In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar – In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs and vanilla – Beat in eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  5. Combine – Gently mix in half of the dry ingredients, then the milk, then the rest of the dry ingredients. Stir in the heaping scoop of love until fully combined.
  6. Spread the magic – Spoon the batter into each cupcake liner until they are ¾ full.
  7. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely before icing.

Instructions for the Rainbow Icing

  1. Beat frosting ingredients until fluffy.
  2. Make it rainbow – Divide the frosting into small bowls. Add a different food coloring to each bowl.
  3. Frost with magic – Place each color in a separate sandwich bag and snip the bottom corner with scissors. Alternate colors as you squeeze onto cooled cupcakes to create a rainbow swirl.
  4. Sprinkle with magic – Add edible glitter, sprinkles, or pearl candies for extra sparkle.
  5. Share the magic – Give a cupcake to someone you care about and watch their smile grow.

Teaching Kindness Through Baking

When Luna baked her cupcakes in The Sweetest Magic, she learned that the real joy came from her confidence, pride in learning a new skill, and sharing them with others. Baking with your kids or students isn’t just about making something tasty – it’s an opportunity to teach empathy, patience, creativity, and confidence.

Pro tip for teachers: Pair story time with this recipe for a perfect kindness-themed classroom activity. After reading The Sweetest Magic, have students decorate the included cupcake printable and write a short note of kindness.

Give each child a “Decorate a Cupcake” page with a blank cupcake to design for a classmate. Using crayons, markers, or colored pencils, they decorate their cupcake in any style they wish—rainbow sprinkles, magical swirls, or even glittery stars! Below their drawing, they write something kind about the person they’re giving it to. For younger children who can’t yet write, they can share their kind words aloud instead. This simple but meaningful exercise encourages thoughtfulness, builds confidence, and reminds students that small acts of kindness—like a sweet compliment—can brighten someone’s whole day.
