Machines
There are many different sewing machines in all different price ranges. You can absolutely get started with a cheap machine or a used machine from marketplace or a local thrift store. However, if your machine was not properly maintained, it could be a hectic headache. If you are able to splurge, some of the features I can't believe I lived without on my first machine are a variety of stiches with the ability to customize stitch length. This is essential for setting a custom length for machine sewing buttons as an example. Another feature that has made my life so much easier is automatic needle down. One last silly feature is when I first started teaching my daughter to sew, it was hard for her to reach the sewing pedal. There is a feature where you can press the play/pause button on the top of your machine that helped her get started sewing.
Beginner Sewing Machines
Brother Sewing Machine Lightweight
This is a basic beginner sewing machine. It comes with all the essential stiches you need and is a good quality machine for the price.
Singer Patchwork Plus
This is the machine I use most often and you will see in many of my videos. It is a great price with great functionality!
Singer Quantum Stylist
This is a great hobby sewing machine that will last and save you frustration of lower end models. It even comes with an extension table for quilting.
Additionally, you might want additional machines like a serger, sublimation printer, or embroidery machine. A serger is used to overlock and cut the fabric on seams. It is especially useful when sewing knits. An example of this is if you look at the seam on a t-shirt. It gives your projects a professional finish. A sublimation printer is not specific to sewing but I use it in a lot of my projects. It prints using special ink that you can iron onto sublimation blanks and certain fabrics. In this project, I use my machine to create custom tags for my sewing projects. An embroidery machine is great to have on hand if you are able to purchase one. They allow you to program a design or name and add custom embroidery to your sewing projects (and everyday fabric items you have at home)!
Additional Machines
Brother Combination Embroidery and Sewing Machine
If you are interested in embroidery, this is a great combination machine. You can get this in place of a separate sewing machine and do both!
Brother Sublimation Printer
This is the sublimation printer I use. With this machine I make custom labels and even custom designs on my fabric!
Singer Heavy Duty Serger
This is a great basic serger to finish your projects with a professional look.
Ironing
A good amount of time on sewing projects is spent ironing. I have a couple irons of different sizes. You will want to make sure you have a small iron for hems. I also have a larger iron for when I am working on clothing and ironing my finished projects.
Ironing Tools
Hot Hem Ruler
Measure and iron your hems directly on this iron-safe ruler. A huge time saver for creating perfect hems.
Miniature Travel Steam Iron
This travel iron is perfect for ironing hems and small projects. It is portable and very useful in sewing and quilting.
Wool Ironing Mat
A wool iron mat can be extremely useful in your sewing projects. Pin fabric directly to the mat and watch as the mat retains the irons heat.
Cutting
Its a toss-up whether more time is spent ironing or cutting. Either way, these tools are absolutely essential for almost every project tutorial on this website. If you are just getting started, you absolutely need a self-healing mat (the bigger the better), and a rotary cutter.
Cutting Tools
Buttonhole Cutter Set
This set is essential for cutting button holes. It is also useful for attaching things like magnetic snaps.
Fabric Pinking Shears
You will see these often in my videos. You can use them to prevent fraying, make decorative edges, and thin bulky seams like around curves.
Fabric Scissors
You will need at least one pair of good quality fabric scissors to cut out your patterns and get nice, clean cuts.
Quilting Starter Kit
All items in this set are absolutely essential to get started. Align the ruler over your fabric on the mat to cut perfect squares and rectangles.
Thread Snips
My grandma used to carry these in her purse and now I've followed in her footsteps! You will use these everyday for cutting loose threads.
Pinning, Marking, Working with Patterns
When transferring patterns to fabric and preparing to sew, you will often need to make marks on your fabric, pin or clip fabrics together, pin pockets on fabrics, and keep patterns weighted down while sewing. These products are essential for these tasks and help make the process go smoothly!
Marking & Pattern Tools
100 Pack Sewing Clips in Tin
Not only are these clips extremely useful for keeping your fabric together, they come in an adorable tin that will look great in your sewing room!
Glass Pattern Weights
Pattern weights are useful for keeping your fabric still while cutting around the pattern with a rotary cutter.
Magnetic Pin Cushion
This magnetic 'pin cushion' is amazing for keeping your pins organized. Wave it above your workspace and it will attract the loose pins.
Tailors Chalk Pack of 8
This chalk is essential for making markings and tracing patterns. It is easy to see and can be wiped or washed off when your project is complete.
Project Embellishments
These items are miscellaneous embellishments used in many of the projects on this website. These include things like plastic snaps, zippers, magnetic snaps, carabiner clips, keychain loops, and fusible interfacing.
Sewing Extras
D-Rings for Sewing Projects
D-Rings are useful for making clutches. They let you easily clip straps onto your pouch!
Keyrings
Many projects on this website are keychains. It is useful to have a pack of keyrings on hand to add to your keychain loops.

These snaps elevate the look and ease of your handmade bags. They are very simple to attach and great to have at the ready.
Medium Weight Fusible Interfacing Roll
Ironing interfacing to the back of your fabric adds extra strength and form.
